Biographical Note

Karl Christian Sandberg (1931-2000) was born on March 7, 1931 in Salt Lake City, Utah to George W. And Ruby I Woodard Sandberg. He married Dawn Bennion Sandberg (1929-2020) in 1954 and together the two had four children. Sandberg was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Between 1951 and 1953, he served a mission in France. During this time, he learned to speak French and became interested in the language and culture of France. Upon his return to the United States, Sandberg obtained a BA in English and an MA in French from Brigham Young University (BYU) in 1954 and 1957 and a Ph.D. in French from the University of Wisconsin in 1960.

Sandberg taught briefly at BYU, Duke University, the University of Colorado, and the University of Minnesota, and for 7 years at the University of Arizona. He spent most of his career teaching at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. In addition to his career as an educator, Sandberg was an author of many books about the French language and about religion. Sandberg died on April 26, 2000.
