Historical Note

The Chicano Studies Program was first thought of in 1969 by the Education Policies Committee. In 1970 the Resident Instructional Staff approved a B.A. program in Chicano studies. Despite much local criticism about the program in 1972 the History Department expanded to offer a Chicano History, based on Chicano's personal interpretations of historical events. The course received much criticism from Chicano students as it was being taught by non Chicano people with no background in this area of study. Due to this the course was dropped as the university had no other professors they deemed fit to teach the course. The program itself suffered from low enrollment until the late 1980's. The program was later restructured and renamed.
