Historical Note

The Jayceens was an organization formed in 1920 and composed of the wives of members of the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce (commonly known as Jaycees). While the Missoula chapter went by the name of “Jayceens”, these auxiliary groups were formed on a chapter-to-chapter basis with some groups taking different names such as the “Jaycettes.” The Missoula Jayceens, active from 1945 to 1985, was dedicated to the support of their husbands and their endeavors in the Jaycees, and support for the surrounding communities through philanthropic events. In 1985, following the ruling of the Supreme Court case Roberts v. United States Jaycees and dissolution of the Jaycee Women on the national scale, the Missoula Jayceens (also called Jaycee Women at this point) were allowed admittance into the Jaycees and the chapter disbanded.

Content Description

This collection consists of two scrapbooks of the Missoula Jayceens, constructed by Carol Baker during her time as president in the 1960's. The contents of the first scrapbook provide primarily photographic documentation of Jayceen activities. Organizational events included Jayceen meetings both with Jaycees and not, election events, an inaugural ball, and various parties. Among the community and philanthropic activities documented are Missoula community surveys, a charity bazaar, Thanksgiving baskets for community members, donations to "opportunity schools", and donations for Toys for Tots. The second scrapbook details the same general subject matter as the first including organization-based events and community activities the organization pursued. Community-based endeavors for 1966-1967 documented in this scrapbook include: Legion baseball concession volunteering, a measles immunization clinic, visits to a MS patient in the community, hosting the Junior Miss Pageant and State Junior Miss Pageant, and the compiling and distribution of Christmas stockings for children.
