Biographical Note
James N. Glover came to Spokane Falls in 1879, where, in partnership with Cyrus Yeaton, he opened a store. By 1876 he had enlarged the store and attracted other investors and developers to the area. When the Northern Pacific began construction in the vicinity of Spokane Falls, Glover supplied the company with materials, hay and grain. He served as mayor, 1883-1885, and operated the First National Bank, which he had founded in 1882. His accumulated wealth was lost in the financial panic of 1893, and he spent years rebuilding his fortune. For his active involvement with development of the city, he was called in his own time, “the Father of Spokane.”
