Historical Note

The first University of Idaho Jazz Festival took place in 1967, with a dozen student groups and one guest artist. The festival continued to grow from there, even lining up Ella Fitzgerald to take U of I's stage in 1982. In 1984, Lionel Hampton visited and performed at the festival, and soon established a long-lasting relationship with the unviersity. Inspired by the enthusiasm of the students, Hamp pledged his support to the festival and, in 1985, the festival was renamed in his honor. From the festival, many outreach intiatives have taken place. The "Jazz in the Schools" program began in the year 1995. In 2007, the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival was awarded a National Medal of Arts — the nation's most prestigious arts award. Performers have included artists such as Doc Severinsen, Bobby McFerrin, Sarah Vaughan, Dizzy Gillespie, The Manhattan Transfer, and countless musicians from around the world.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

This processing for this collection was begun by Courtney Berg. Berg had begun arranging and separating the materials into series as well as creating folder names. The materials in the Jazz Office Series were in no apparent order, and so the next processor continued with the previous arrangement strategy by Berg.

Acquisition Information

The materials were transfered to U of I Library Special Collections and Archives from the Jazz Festival Office in 2016.
