Biographical Note

Seattle City Councilman, and Washington State senator.

Nichols was born in 1879, and died in 1949. He served in the Washington State senate as Republican from the 31st. district, King County, 1907-ca.1915; he served on the Seattle City Council until 1934 when he lost reelection.

He was in the first ascent party of Alaska’s Mt. St. Elias in 1897. The 1897 first ascent of Mt. St. Elias was made by an Italian expedition led by Prince Luigi Amedeo, Duke of the Abruzzi. The party included several experienced mountaineers, among them Italian photographer Vittorio Sella; and they hired several students from Washington as porters, including Nichols. Though Nichols did not summit, his diary contains a valuable account of the party’s three-month journey pre- and post-summit. Mt. St. Elias is infrequently climbed today due to a lack of easy routes and long periods of inclement weather, even in the summer.
