Historical Note

Graphic Design 375 was offered in fall of 2019 at Montana State University. One of the assigned projects, Bozeman to Berlin Artist Book Collaboration, was completed by students at both Montana State University and University of Applied Sciences Europe, Berlin Campus. The University of Applied Sciences focuses on studies in Business, Sports, Media and Event and Art and Design. MSU students scheduled time to work with the press located on campus to complete their project.

Items were scheduled to be on display at the Exit Gallery in spring of 2020.

Letterpress printing is a printing technique which uses impressions of an inked surface to produce multiple copies of a work. Letterpress printing can be done with a specifically designed press with movable type, but can also be produced using wood engravings, photo-etched plates, and many other materials to produce consistent results for multiple pressings.

Content Description

Twelve artist books created for Graphic Design 375 at MSU in fall 2019, taught by Ashley Fuchs. All books were created with letterpress printing. The project, Bozeman to Berlin Artist Book Collaboration, was a partnership with UE University of Applied Sciences Europe, Berlin Campus, teacher Laureen Mahler. The books were to use the theme "motion in narrative," were required to have a coptic binding, and students were able to use any array of materials (metal, wood, polymer plates etc.) to produce the pages. Artist statements were written by the MSU student associated with each item. The statements focus on the collaborative process and how artistic decisions were made. The course syllabus, with project details, has also been included.
