- The Melville L. Woods Scrapbook primarily contains memorabilia from Woods’ time as a student at the University of Montana (then called the State University of Montana) from 1915-1919. It covers fraternal activities, sporting events, scholastic competitions, dances, and other aspects of student life at the university. Biographical Note
Melville Leroy Woods was born on July 21, 1895 in Independence, Iowa to Arthur and Mabel Woods. His family relocated to Boise, Idaho, and he graduated from Boise High School in 1914. Woods attended the University of Montana from 1915-1919 where he studied Business Administration. As an active student on campus, Woods joined Iota Nu Fraternity and was also the president of the Junior Class. After graduating from the university in 1919 Woods eventually settled in Bellingham, Washington, where he worked in finance. He married Dora McAllister in 1935. Woods died on July 15, 1984 in Bellingham.
Content Description
The collection consists of one scrapbook focusing on Melville L. Woods’ time as a student at the University of Montana (then called the State University of Montana) from 1915-1919. The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, dance cards, programs, photographs, student publications, and other ephemera. Highlights include Iota Nu and other Greek life events, football, the Forestry Club and Foresters’ Ball, Aber Day, and the Student Army Training Corps during World War I. Many other university activities are also documented as is some limited material from Woods’ high school days in Boise, Idaho, and post-college life.

The original order of the scrapbook was maintained.
Custodial History
The scrapbook was purchased by Bob Graves from an antique shop in Bellingham, Washington. Bob Graves gifted to scrapbook to University of Montana Law professor Martin Burke, who then passed it onto Fritz Snyder, the director at the UM Law Library before Snyder transferred it to the Mansfield Library Archives and Special Collections in 2005.
