Historical Note
John Barkham (1908-1998) was a journalist and magazine writer. As a journalist, he worked as a reporter for the Rand Daily Mail, became a roving correspondent, and then took a job as head of the Pretoria Bureau of South Africa newspaper. During the 1940s, Barkham became a South African correspondent for Time and Life magazines and worked as head of the Time and Life Middle East Bureau. In 1944, he became a foreign news writer for Time Magazine. Thereafter, Barkham became a book reviewer for the Book-of-the-Month Club, the New York Times, the Saturday Review of Literature, and a contributor to various literary magazines.
Content Description
Collection contains typescript and holograph manuscripts of articles, features, book reviews, newspaper reports; lists of authors reviewed; newspaper clippings of articles by Barkham; scrapbooks; and photographs of Mika Waltari and George McGovern.
