Historical NoteReturn to Top

Anne Baxter was a 20th century stage, film, and television actress. She got her start on Broadway in the 1930s debuting in "Seen but Not Heard" (1936) at the age of 13. By 1940 she made her way to Hollywood winning an Academy Award for her supporting role as Sophie in "The Razor's Edge" (1946) and starring in many noteworthy films of the 1940s and 1950s, including Eve in "All About Eve" (1950) and Queen Nefretiri in "The Ten Commandments" (1956). By the 1960s Baxter began to appear in many television shows and movies including the series "Batman" and the movie "Stranger on the Run" (1967). In the early 1970s she returned to Broadway to play the role of Margo Channing in the stage musical "Applause", based on "All About Eve". In the early eighties she played the role of Victoria Cabot in the ABC series "Hotel" until her death in 1985.

Anne Baxter was born in Michigan City, Indiana on May 7, 1923 to Catherine Dorothy Wright Baxter, daughter of Frank Lloyd Wright, and Kenneth Stuart Baxter. Baxter married actor John Hodiak in 1946, Australian rancher Randolph Galt in 1960, and investment banker David Klee in 1977. Klee died later the same year. She had three children Katrina Hodiak, Melissa Galt, and Maginel Galt. While in New York, Anne Baxter suffered from a brain aneurysm and died on December 12, 1985.
