Historical Note

Wayne Samuel Brown was born on March 19, 1928 in Provo, Utah. He received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Utah in 1951, his M.S. from the University of Tennessee in 1953, and his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1960. Both Brown's M.S. and Ph.D. were also in the field of Mechanical Engineering. His teaching affiliation with the University of Utah spanned the years 1953-1988. He was also Acting Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford from 1957-1959. Two of Brown's main research interests were thermal stresses on teeth and rock mechanics. Brown founded several companies including Eaton-Kenway, Terra Tek, Inc., NPI, Utah Innovation Center, Tennessee Innovation Center, and the Utah Innovation Foundation. He was the prime mover in instituting the series of International Symposia on Technical Innovation and Entrepreneurship and, before his death, was scheduled to be co-chairman of the 1988 Third International Symposium in Australia.

Content Description

This collection contains Wayne Samuel Brown's personal, research, and business papers from the 1950s to the 1980s.

Box 1 of the collection contains biographical accounts of Brown, born March 19, 1928 in Provo, Utah, and his parents. It also includes other personal information such as resumes, correspondence, records of school activities, and church talks given as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Brown received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Utah in 1951, his M.S. from the University of Tennessee in 1953, and his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1960. Both Brown's M.S. and Ph.D. were also in the field of Mechanical Engineering. His teaching affiliation with the University of Utah spanned the years 1953-1988. He was also Acting Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford from 1957-1959.

Documents resulting from his research activities at Stanford are located in Box 1A. Boxes 2-4 contain class rolls, exams, homework assignments, and personal notes from classes he taught at both universities.

Two of Brown's main research interests were thermal stresses on teeth and rock mechanics. Materials on thermal stresses are found in boxes 5-9 and include correspondence, background information and research papers by Brown, newspaper articles, and information relating to research institutions such as the National Institute of Dental Research.

Boxes 10-12 focus on rock mechanics. Research papers and studies constitute the bulk of this material.

Materials resulting from Brown's career as an entrepreneur are found in boxes 13-29. Dr. Brown founded several companies including Eaton-Kenway, Terra Tek, Inc., NPI, Utah Innovation Center, Tennessee Innovation Center, and the Utah Innovation Foundation. He was the prime mover in instituting the series of International Symposia on Technical Innovation and Entrepreneurship and, before his death, was scheduled to be co-chairman of the 1988 Third International Symposium in Australia.

In relation to Brown's interest in innovation, this collection contains correspondence, background information, research and corporate publications, innovation speeches and papers by Brown, and research projects associated with the National Science Foundation, the Utah Innovation Center, and other institutions.

Subject files and reports resulting from Brown's other activities and associations are housed in boxes 30-33. They include institutions he associated with and general subject areas such as "heat pumps" as well as reports and studies by authors other than Brown. Boxes 34-36 of the collection contain business and membership cards and miscellaneous materials including newspaper articles, pamphlets, and oversize materials.
