Historical Note
In 1901, the Boxer Uprising (or Rebellion) was ended by the signing of the Peking Protocol on September 7, 1901. Nations of the opposing Eight-Nation Alliance included Austria-Hungary, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Russia, and the United States; among other items the Protocols included clauses allowing the placing of foreign garrisons in Peking/Beijing.
Content Description
This photographic album contains images from the signing of the Peking Protocol, and images in China immediately afterwards. Images include scenes of destruction from the Uprising, scenes of foreign garrisons thereafter, and many other topics. Though apparently commercially produced (based on the printed bilingual captions mounted with each picture), the album has neither a title page nor other bibliographic information to indicate its origins. Inside the album's spine are handwritten Japanese characters reading something to the effect of Garrison/Battalion/Regiment #2.
Use of the Collection
Restrictions on Use
Due to the fragile nature of the album and included items, these cannot currently be digitally scanned.

Administrative Information
Arrangement
Individual photographs are bound in the album in which they were received, in their original order, generally four to a page. Descriptive captions (both in Japanese and in English) were originally attached separately below each image, but many of these have been lost over the years; those still present are listed here. Most photographs are 5.25" wide by 3.875" high; where images are two to a page they are approximately double that width. Two additional 8"x10" photographic prints (reproductions) were received with the album and are foldered beneath it.
On each page described below, photographs are listed in western reading fashion: left to right, top to bottom.
Acquisition Information
This collection was received at WSU Libraries' Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections in April, 2002 from retiring WSU History professor Thomas Kennedy. It is possible, though not certain, that Dr. Kennedy had received this from a Frank Carpenter of Braintree, Massachusetts, in 1975.
Processing Note
This collection was processed by Tim Mace and University Archivist Mark O'English in June, 2009.
