Biographical Note

Charles E. Martin, Professor Emeritus of Political Science, was born in 1891 at Corsicana, Texas, and received his A.B. degree in 1914 at the University of Southern California, A.M. in 1915 at the same Institution, and Ph. D. at Columbia in 1918. Martin was awarded an LL.D. degree by the University of Southern California in 1942.

Martin served as head of the Department of Political Science at University of California at Los Angeles from 1920 to 1925, coming to the University of Washington in 1925 to assume the chairmanship of the Department of Political Science, a position he held until 1951. At the University of Washington, as Professor of International Law and Political Science (1925-1962), Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences (1926-1929) and Director of the Institute of International Affairs (1935-1962), Martin's long and distinguished career coincided with -- and was in large part responsible for -- the growing national reputation of the Political Science Department and the programs and policies which enabled the Department to maintain that reputation.
