Historical Note

Ferdinand Julius Fohs (1884-1965) was a geologist who conducted oil and mineral resources exploration and development in the United States, Canada, and West Asia. He grew up in Marion, Kentucky, and studied at Columbia University. Fohs began his career with the United States Geological Survey in Kentucky. He first visited Palestine in 1919. He returned to West Asia after the Second World War, where he studied and reported on petroleum and water resources in the area before and after the creation of the State of Israel. His work in petroleum exploration also took him to the western United States, especially Montana and North Dakota. Fohs wrote articles on geology and petroleum in West Asia and the Soviet Union and on world oil resources.
