Summary
The architectural firm of Harold Whitehouse (1884-1974) and Ernest V. Price (1881-1975) was established in 1914. Its work included business blocks, schools, many churches, large World War II military construction projects, as well as residences. The firm was especially known for the gothic design of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Spokane. The collection includes a substantial file of correspondence relating to the construction of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. In addition, the Eastern Washington State Historical Society has 20 flat files of drawings from the Whitehouse and Price firm.

Historical Note

Content Description

The collection consists entirely of records pertaining to the construction of St. John the Evangelist Catherdral. It includes a substantial file of correspondence relating to the construction of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist: design development of the windows done by the Connick Studios, New York, 1951-1971; correspondence and receipts pertaining to stonecutting, Walker Stone Co., 1943-1954, and Indiana Limestone Co., 1943-1961; and correspondence, receipts, and sketches toward the development of designs for the interior furnishings, memorial chapels, organ, chimes, and memorial plaques.

In addition to the manuscript collection, the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture/Eastern Washington State Historical Society has twenty flat files of architectural drawings from the Whitehouse and Price firm. Included are residences, business buildings, fountains, churches, and all of the sketches and drawings for the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. A partial list of drawings is included below; contact the repository for more details

The University of Oregon at Eugene holds the bulk of the Whitehouse and Price papers and drawings (Ax 373).
