Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Sun Oil Company was established in 1886 by Joseph Newton Pew and Edward O. Emerson. It was officially called Sun Oil in 1890 as business gained momentum. Sun Oil opened its first service station in the early 1920s and placed its stock in the New York Stock Exchange a few years later in 1925. The company continued to experience success up until the beginning of WWII when it decided to form its own mining company. In 1956, Sun Oil introduced a new invention, revolutionizing the oil industry, called the Custom Blending Pump which had the capability to dispense a choice of five octane grades of gas through one pump. In the 1970s, Sun Oil went through a major restructuring that led to an updated name: Sun Company, Inc. Today, the company operates under the name Sunoco.
