Summary
The Parker M. Nielson audio-visual collections consists of records concerning the termination of the mixed-blood Utes pursuant to the Ute Termination Act of August 27, 1954 (25 U.S.C., 677, et. seq). The collection documents the events leading up to termination and the representations made to the Indians by tribal attorneys and officials of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Included are meeting recordings, interviews and discussions, and conference recordings. This collection is not yet digitized. Contact Special Collections if interested.

Biographical Note

Parker M. Nielson (b. 1932) received his J.D. from the University of Utah College of Law and practices in Salt Lake City. He has represented "mixed-blood" Ute Indians and is the author of The Dispossessed: Cultural Genocide of the Mixed-Blood Utes.

Content Description

The Parker M. Nielson audio-visual collection consists of materials concerning the termination of the mixed-blood Utes pursuant to the Ute Termination Act of August 27, 1954 (25 U.S.C., 677, et. seq). The collection documents the events leading up to termination and the representations made to the Indians by tribal attorneys and officials of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. It includes recordings of meetings, discussions, interviews, and speeches. Recordings of some keynotes and panels from the Indian Self-Rule: Fifty Years Under the Indian Reorganization Act conference in 1983 are also present. This collection is not yet digitized.
