Historical Note

The Seattle Men’s Chorus (SMC) and the Seattle Women’s (SWC) Chorus were founded in 1979 and 2002, respectively. The foundation of their organization is to showcase programs that highlight LGBTQ voices and experiences.

SMC held its first rehearsal in September of 1979 and first official concert in Spring of 1980. SMC has become a prominent leader in LGBTQ choruses all over the world and participated in many broadcasts, recordings, and performances as well as an international tour. Their annual holiday performance is a popular attraction in Seattle. SMC has performed with Seattle Symphony as well as venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Boston Symphony Hall, and Seattle’s Benaroya Hall and McCaw Hall.

SWC held its first rehearsal in September of 2002 and debuted in December of the same year. SWC performs a wide range of music including classical and popular. They have led many projects supporting organizations like Women for Women International, Lambert House, CADA, and many others. They have toured the Western United States and released two CDs.

These Seattle Choruses have been heavily involved in several social justice movements including women’s rights, the AIDS epidemic, and marriage equality.
