Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Lieutenant Frank ("Fritz") T. Waskowitz was a student at the University of Washington in the 1930s. He grew up in Chicago, where he was a graduate of Lindblom High School. At the University of Washington, Waskowitz played on the football team and was the team captain for the 1937 season. Waskowitz left the University of Washington for academic reasons at the conclusion of the football season during his senior year, then played professional football with the New York Giants in 1938. Waskowitz joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1940 and was badly burned during the bombing of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. He went on to serve as pilot of the B-17E Flying Fortress bomber 'Blue Goose' in the Pacific campaign during WWII. Waskowitz' plane was shot down by Japanese anti-aircraft fire in the Solomon Islands on September 29, 1942, killing him and all of the plane's crew.
