Biographical Note
Elizabeth "Pearl" McDonnell was born in Cincinnati, March 17th, 1880 to Nancy Jane Thomas, of Pennsylvania, and Michael Joseph McDonnell, who immigrated as a child from Ireland. Her family moved from Snohomish Washington to Seattle in 1898 so that she and her sister could attend the University of Washington, where she graduated from in 1902. McDonnell earned her degree of Education in 1903 and then became a librarian at the University of Washington. She later worked at the University of North Dakota. McDonnell returned to the University of Washington as a director of residence halls and stayed in that position until the end of her career. Her sister Elizabeth “Bess” McDonnell (graduated from the U.W. 1903) later married another U.W. graduate, Donald A. McDonald. [Adapted from donor provided biographical note, November 2023]
