Historical Note

Campbell was born in New Hampshire and came to the Piper Ranche, southeast of Pueblo, Colorado, in 1879 to work as a cook and a ranch hand. From April to November 1879 he took part in herding cattle in what are now Pueblo, Otero, and Bent counties before working as a cook in Longmont, Colorado, and Cheyenne, Wyoming. Campbell joined the W.H. Holliday Company of Laramie, Wyoming, as a bookkeeper in June 1881. He left the company in 1887 to manage a lumberyard in San Diego, California. He returned to his position with the W.H. Holliday Company in 1888 and stayed with the firm until 1900. Campbell then became an agent for the New York Life Insurance Company, until 1906, when he became district manager for Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Company in Laramie, a position he would hold until his death in 1946. Campbell was married in 1890 to May Baird (1864-1930), the daughter of Mary M. and John Baird.
