Biographical Note

Professor Emeritus Richard Kirkendall occupied the Bullitt Chair in American History from 1988-1998. Kirkendall has also held faculty positions at Wesleyan (1955-1958), the University of Missouri, Columbia (1958-1973), Indiana University, and Iowa State University (1981-1988), where he was the Henry A. Wallace Professor of History. He retired from teaching in 1998. Born in Spokane, Washington on April 11, 1928 Kirkendall received his B.A. from Gonzaga University in 1950 and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1958. Between college and graduate school he served in the United States Navy in North Korean waters.

Content Description

Collection includes correspondence, teaching files, subject series (1950s-1980s), personal papers, writings, publications, research files, conference files, lectures and talks, photographs, grant materials, administrative documents, awards, certificates, oral history transcripts, oral history recordings, and other audiovisual recordings. Also includes records from Kirkendall's work as member, executive secretary, and ad hoc committee chair of the Organization of American Historians. Much of the collection is focused on Kirkendall's research and writings on Henry A. Wallace, Henry C. Wallace ("Uncle Henry"), and Harry S. Truman.
