Historical Note

The University of Montana in Missoula first opened for classes in 1895, moving to its current location at the base of Mount Sentinel in 1899. Initially called the University of Montana, the university went through several name changes. With the establishment of the Montana University System in 1913, it became the State University of Montana. The name changed again in 1935 to Montana State University. In 1965, the institution again became the University of Montana as decreed by state legislation that renamed five of the state's colleges to "more accurately describe the schools' respective functions."

Content Description

This collection consists of commencement banners for the University of Montana in Missoula. Banners were created from 1898-1970 and then again from 1993-present. Traditionally, the class banner is made by a student of the graduating class and presented during commencement ceremonies. Until the 1940s the banner featured only the graduation year; later banners generally feature a design associated with the university in addition to the year. Since the early 2000s, the university’s Davidson Honors College has overseen the student selected to make that year’s banner.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, no banner was created for 2020 or 2021.
