Historical Note

Matchbook collecting was a popular hobby in the United States in the 20th century. Hobbyists, calling themselves the "philoluminous", gathered matchbooks and matchboxes from restaurant and tourist destinations as mementos. During this time, restaurants were eager to distribute these items to generate more awareness of their brand. Demand for matches fell as smoking bans were implemented in indoor settings in the late 1980s and 1990s, and the hobby declined in popularity accordingly.

Content Description

This collection includes matchbooks and matchboxes from business establishments, including restaurants, hotels, and others in the Pacific Northwest, many that no longer exist. Matchbooks are arranged alphabetically by business name. The collection was created by Neal Starkman who first came to Seattle in 1975 and although a non-smoker began to collect matchbooks from restaurants around the city and outlying areas. He expanded his collecting efforts to other businesses and even collected during his travels. Starkman stopped collecting in the 2010s.
