Historical Note

Glen Alps was born in Colorado in 1914. He attended Colorado State College of Education (now known as the University of Northern Colorado) and received a Bachelors of Arts in 1940. He began attending the University of Washington in 1945 and earned his Masters of Fine Arts in 1947.

In 1956, Alps started experimenting with and developing a style of printing which he named "collagraphy." This method of printing combined printmaking with aspects of collage, often incorporating torn up paper, string, and other objects to provide additional texture to prints.

Alps taught as a member of the University of Washington Art Department until his resignation in 1984. In addition to exploring collagraphy, he also designed and sold his own line of printing presses. These machines were recognized for their utilitarian design and versitility. He died in 1996.
