Historical Note

The Department of Architecture was established in 1914 as a part of the College of Fine Arts. An Urban Design and Planning department was added in 1941, and it joined with Architecture to form a separate college in 1957. The Department of Landscape Architecture and Building Construction was initiated in 1960, and separated into two different departments in 1963. In 1983, the College was renamed the College of Architecture and Urban Planning. Currently, the College consists of four departments: Architecture, Construction Management, Landscape Architecture, and Urban Design and Planning. All four components are directly concerned with the design and development of the physical environment. The College focuses on environmental design disciplines with a liberal arts context; students often use the UW campus and the city of Seattle as labs for practical study applications. The name changed to the College of Built Environments in 2009.
