Historical Note
In 1903, Dr. D.C. Budge partnered with Dr. W.R. Calderwood to open the region’s first seven-bed hospital on the corner of Center and Second West. The Budge Hospital relocated to the Amussen Building, on Center and 100 West, becoming an 18-bed facility staffed by five doctors in 1905. Completed in 1914 the Utah Idaho Hospital, located near the Logan LDS Temple, was a 50-bed facility which incorporated the latest advances in medical technology including the X-Ray machine. Despite these improvements, the facility was not equipped to accommodate patients with contagious or infectious diseases.
In 1926, the Utah Idaho Hospital underwent an expansion becoming a 100-bed facility with six operating rooms and changed its name to the William Budge Memorial Hospital. A competing hospital opened in 1920, located on Main Street, and was called Cache Valley General Hospital. Construction of a new facility, located on 52 North 100 East near the Tabernacle, was completed in 1929.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints bought both the Budge Memorial Hospital and the Cache Valley General Hospital in 1948. Shortly afterwards, the Cache Valley General Hospital was closed and the Budge Memorial Hospital became Logan LDS Hospital with 18 physicians. The hospital underwent its final expansion, at the location on Main Street, in 1959. Almost 30 years after its purchase, the LDS Church sold its system of 15 hospitals to the communities they served. Intermountain Healthcare, a non-profit health care system, formed and renamed the hospital to Logan Hospital. By 1977, the Logan Hospital was a 126-bed facility with 55 physicians.
Construction for Logan Regional Hospital, located on 500 East 1400 North, began in 1977 and was completed in 1980. Since its completion various departments, such as the Intermountain Budge Clinic, Women and Newborn Center, Dayspring Center, Cancer Center, and other inpatient and outpatient departments, have been added.
