Content Description

This scrapbook was created by Leon F. Ray, M.D. and annotated by his wife Barbara Jean Reed Ray. Barbara was in Fort Riley, KS with Leon until the 46th General Hospital shipped out for Algeria. The scrapbook contains photographs, newspaper clippings, cards, and correspondence regarding the deployment of the 46th General Hospital, U.S. Army, from 1942 to 1945. It includes pictures of many of the individuals in the unit, many of whom were physicians from the University of Oregon Medical School, along with locations in Fort Riley, Kansas; Oran, Algeria; Southern France; and Besancon, France.

In addition to documenting movements of the 46th General Hospital, this scrapbook contains many photographs of life at Fort Riley, including pool parties, shopping trips, and tornadoes (one that missed the Fort and one that didn't), highlighting the day-to-day lives of both military members and their families during the lead up to deployment. Additional photos document other locations, such as Portland during the Vanport Flood and a trip to New York City.

The scrapbook also includes the October 8, 1943 edition of the "46th Hypo" newsletter (volume 1, number 2), and thee editions of The Stars and Stripes military paper (Stars and Stripes Africa: November 6, 1943; and Stars and Stripes Mediterranean: December 25, 1943 and January 1, 1944.
