The Pectol shields repatriation collection (2001-2008) consists primarily of copies and computer printouts of correspondence, documents, and writings related to three buffalo-hide shields that were repatriated to the Navajo Nation under Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA).
Series 1: Correspondence. This series contains correspondence between the United States Natioanl Park Service, specifically, Lee Kreutzer, the Cultural Resource Program Manager at Capitol Reef National Park; the Pectol family; tribal nations; federal and state government agencies; and experts in the field. Primarily copies and computer printouts. Arranged chronologically.
Series 2: Correspondence: deaccession package and consultation. The second series contains correspondence and documents entitled "Deaccession package and consultation" with tribal nations. The general consultation document at the beginning of each folder contains a chronological outline between the NPS and tribe(s). Primarily copies and computer printouts. Arranged chronologically.
Series 3: Documents. This series contains primarily documents related to the Pectol shields. Primarily copies and computer printouts. Arranged alphabetically.
Series 4: Writings. The last series contains writings by the experts who were consulted by Capitol Reef National Park. They include: Lawrence Loendorf; Benson Lanford; and Barton A. Wright. Arranged alphabetically.
