Biographical Note

The School of Mining Engineering was established in 1893, although a curriculum was not in place until a year later. The College of Mines was established in 1898. Due to enrollment declines, the College of Mines was incorporated into the College of Engineering as the School of Mineral Engineering in 1947. In 1968 the School was reorganized into the Department of Mining, Metallurgical, and Ceramic Engineering. The degree program in Mining Engineering was dropped in 1976. The Department was renamed the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in 1983. A single degree program was established in 2002 after combining the metallugical and ceramic engineering degree programs.
