Historical Note

George Roy Elliott (1883-1963) was an American author and literary critic, best known for his works on English poetry and prose. Born in December 1883 in Ontario, Canada, he moved to the United States in 1910 and later married Alma Lee Wilkins in Wisconsin in 1920. Elliott served as the Henry Leland Chapman Professor of Literature at Bowdoin College in Maine for twelve years, where he influenced students through his exploration of the ideals and spiritual themes in poetry and prose. He published at least thirteen works on topics including teaching, education, Shakespeare, and John Keats, cementing his reputation as a prominent voice in literary criticism. Elliott passed away in October 1963 at the age of 79.
