Historical Note
Richard S. Whitcomb was an officer in the U.S. Army during the twentieth century. As a Major during World War II, Whitcomb served in Iceland (1941-1943) and was the commander of the U.S. Army's 11th Port Company in England and France (1943-1945). He was promoted to Brigadier General soon after World War II and served as the U.S. Army's port commander in Manila, Philippines during the mid 1940s. Whitcomb was commander of the Korean Base Section during the Korean War (1950-1953) and led the relief and reconstruction effort after the Pusan (South Korea) Fire (1953-1954). He also served in Vietnam and Cambodia during the 1960s and 1970s and traveled in China during the 1970s and early 1980s. Richard S. Whitcomb passed away in 1982.
Content Description
Collection contains photocopies of three 1981 letters written by Richard S. Whitcomb: a letter concerning his recollections of the British and American occupation of Iceland and Greenland during World War II; a letter describing his travels and military service in China, Korea, Vietnam, and Cambodia and his conservative political views; and a letter to his daughter Taejong Min regarding the issue of stress, in which he describes his service in the Philippines. Collection also contains eight certificates of appreciation. A copy of Whitcomb's unpublished manuscript, "One War" (his memoirs about his service in Iceland and Europe during World War II) is in this collection as well.
