Biographical Note

James Adelbert "Jim" McDermott (born December 28, 1936) is the U.S. Representative for Washington's 7th congressional district, serving since 1989. He is a member of the Democratic Party. The 7th District includes most of Seattle, Vashon Island, Tukwila, Burien, Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace, Woodway, and Edmonds. He was a Representative to the Washington State Legislature from the 43rd District (Seattle) 1970-1974. In 1974 he was elected to the State Senate where he served until mid-1982. He ran for Governor in 1972, 1980, and 1984 but was defeated each time. As a Washington State Senator he supported the Basic Education Act, reform of the nursing home industry, improved mental health programs, and budget reform. He serves on the House Ways and Means Committee and is a member of the House Progressive Caucus. He was formerly the committee chairman, then in 1995, ranking minority member on the House Ethics Committee. On January 4, 2016, he announced that he would not be seeking another congressional term.
