Linda King Newell was born in Richfield, Utah, and raised in the community of Fillmore. She attended Southern Utah State College and Utah State University, from which she graduated with a bachelor of art degree in art and speech education. She and her husband, L. Jackson Newell, are the parents of four children. Together they have worked as co-editors of Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought. Newell and co-author Valeen Tippetts Avery spent nine years researching the life of Emma Hale Smith in archives from coast to coast as well as LDS Church historical sites in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, and Iowa. The end result was the award-winning biography, Mormon Enigma: Emma Hale Smith, published in October 1984, by Doubleday and Co., New York. Awards given for the biography include the David Wooley and Beatrice Cannon Evans Award for Excellence in Western and Mormon Biography, 1984; the Mormon History Association Award for the best book published on Mormon history in 1984; and an award presented by the John Whitmer Historical Association for the best book in L.D.S. history, 1985.
