Content Description

From March 1979 to April 1980, Suzanne Rose recorded 48 hours of Kyuquot material, including conversations; monologues; reminiscences about Kyuquot wars, potlaches, Indian medicine, whaling, old photos; and hands-down stories concerning the exploits and downfalls of Raven, Frog, Wolf, Deer, Red Cod, Sea Lion, Pitchwoman and Snotboy, Eagle, Whale, Snail. Also includes four hours of Ahousat material, comprised of similes and location-type suffix association.

Between July to September of 1981, Rose recorded 32 tapes consisting of grammatical information concerning the Kyuquot dialect of the Nootka* (West Coast) language with consultant Mr. Larry Short. She also worked with Mr. George Louie, a fluent Nootka speaker and student at the University of Victoria.

*The term “Nootka” has historically been used as a misnomer by European colonizers for the Nuu-chah-nulth people. The origin of the outdated term can be traced back to the peoples’ first encounters with Europeans, particularly British settler Captain James Cook in 1778.

Historical Background

The Kyuquot (Ka:’yu:’k’t’h’) and Checleseht (Chek’tles7et’h’) First Nations make up the northernmost Nuu-chah-nulth communities on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Once separate bands, the Kyuquot and Checleseht officially amalgamated in 1962. Both are currently self-governing nations under the Maa-nulth Treaty.

The Kyuquot and Checleseht speak Northern Nuu-chah-nulth, which is part of the Wakashan language family. The Kyuquot and Checleseht also each speak their own dialects of this language, which are endangered. According to the First Peoples’ Language Map of BC (2012), there were only about 27 people who claimed to speak and understand them fluently.
