Historical Note

Susan McKay was born on July 26, 1942 in Los Angeles, California to L.F. and Ethel Richardson. Following her graduation from DePauw University in Indiana, she and her husband, John, moved to Boulder, Colorado where she earned a master's degree in maternal child nursing at the University of Colorado. In 1966, they moved to Laramie, Wyoming where her daughters, Julie and Sharon, were born. She earned a Ph.D. in 1978 at the University of Wyoming and was a W.K. Kellogg National Fellow from 1983-1986. In 2000 she was awarded the Presidential Faculty Achievement Award at the University of Wyoming where she was a professor of Women's and International Studies.

Content Description

The Susan McKay collection contains research materials, audio tapes and transcripts of interviews, and other materials from McKay's research on the Heart Mountain Japanese Relocation Center near Cody, Wyoming during World War II and the resulting publication, "The Courage Our Stories Tell: The Daily Lives and Maternal Child Health Care of Japanese American Women at Heart Mountain", published in 2002. Also included are series of audio visual instructional materials, research, photographs, slides, articles, and books regarding pregnant women in rural Wyoming; and research files, presentations, photographs, slides, books, and articles regarding McKay's research of women/mothers from areas of armed conflict such as Sierra Leone in West Africa.
