Biographical Note
Shirley Ellen Blackmer Tyler was born August 3, 1922 in Pocatello, Idaho, to Eva Luella Heaps and Lee Allen Blackmer. She attended schools in Pocatello, Idaho and graduated high school in Twin Falls, Idaho. On August 26, 1940 she married R. Lloyd Tyler at the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. They lived in Twin Falls, Idaho and then moved to Los Angeles, California. During the war, Shirley moved the family back to Twin Falls while R. Lloyd served in the Navy. Later they moved to Walla Walla, Washington in the 1950s. Professionally, Shirley performed office work in 1945 in a Prisoner of War Camp located in Maryland and she obtained a real estate license and worked in real estate for ten years within the Washington area. She also was a census taker for the United States Government in 1970 and she served politically as the secretary of the Women's Republican Committee in Walla Walla.
Rufus Lloyd Tyler was born June 25, 1923 in Attica, Arkansas, to Rufus Black and Mary Ann (Hogan) Tyler. Lloyd began his career working in the retail business starting at the age of eleven when he obtained work at the local Safeway. He continued working during high school and eventually moved his family to Los Angeles, California to be an assistant-manager and relief manager. In 1944, R. Lloyd was drafted into military service during World War II and served in the Navy. R. Lloyd attended boot camp in Farragut, Idaho and for the next two years he was away serving for the United States Navy. He went aboard the aircraft carrier Franklin D. Roosevelt and was released in 1946. After his return from service, he returned to the grocery business in Idaho. During this time, an opportunity arose that would allow him to own his own business in Walla Walla, Washington. He moved the family there and became the owner of State Hardware located on Main Street in Walla Walla, Washington. The store later changed its name to "Tyler's." At the store, he sold general hardware goods along with toys, clothing, and recreational items. The store finally closed in 1988.
Shirley and R. Lloyd were devout members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Together, they served a mission in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, from 1990-1991. Shirley died on April 22, 2009. R. Lloyd died on July 17, 2011. They had eight children: Janice, Anne, Tim, Trudy, Sue, Lloyd, Mary Beth, and Shauna.
