- John P. Simons was a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Utah from 1971 until 2011. He was Chair of the Chemistry Deparment from January 1986 until June 1988. This collection contains correspondence, memoranda, and committee reports from his administration of the Chemistry Department and his service on various university-wide committees.

Biographical Note
John P. Simons was born in Youngstown, Ohio in 1945. He received his B.S. in Chemistry from Case Insitute of Technology in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1970, he earned his Ph.D in Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin. From 1970 to 1971 he was at the Massachusetts Insitute Technology as a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow. Simons began his career at the University of Utah as a Visiting Assitant Professor in the Chemistry Department in 1971. He later became a permament Assistant Professor in 1972. Simons was appointed Chair of the Chemistry Department in 1986 and served in that position until 1988. He would continue to be professor of Chemistry until his retirement in 2011 when he became a Professor Emeritus. His area of expertise was in theoretical chemistry.
Content Description
This collection contains correspondence, memoranda, reports, statistics, and a list of Chemistry Department publications from 1988. Approximately half of the collection consists of correspondence concerning John P. Simon's service on university-wide committees including the Long Range Planning Committee, the Task Force Subcommittee on Bureaucracy and Red Tape, and a review panel of the Math Department. One file contains material from the ACCESS Program which assists female high school graduates in pursuing degrees in math and science at the University. Three files relate to his work outside the University of Utah with chemistry journals and the National Science Foundation. The rest of the collection covers his term as chair of the Chemistry Department.
