Biographical Note

Harrison Harden Hungate was born on April 14, 1836 in Hancock County, Illinois. On August 20, 1857, he married Mary Caroline Duncan and together they lived in McDonough County, Illinois until they moved to Yolo County, California in the spring of 1864. After 9 years in California, they moved to Walla Walla, Washington in 1873. Duncan and Hungate had six children: Charles A. Hungate, Ella Hungate, Laura A. Hungate, Lulu G. Hungate, J.F. Cropp, and Elizabeth Gardner. In Walla Walla, Hungate worked as a farmer and raised livestock before his retirement in 1914. Hungate was a member of the Washington territorial legislature in 1883 and served as the county treasurer of Walla Walla from 1893 to 1894. He was also an active member of the First Baptist church and was one of its first trustees. Hungate died on December 24, 1916 in Walla Walla.

The Hungate Family Papers houses the personal material of the Hungate family. This collection, which dates from 1879 to 1949, consists of photographs of family members, a photographic plate depicting H. H. Hungate, three journals of financial records, titles and deeds to land, mortgage records, plans for a house in Walla Walla, papers relating to the estates of H. H. and Mary Caroline Hungate, and other family records.
