Biographical Note
Joseph W. Scott (1935-2024) was a Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of Washington where he founded the American Ethnic Studies department. Over the course of his 40-year career in academia, he was also the first Black professor to serve at the University of Kentucky and held full-time positions at the University of Toledo, University of Notre Dame, and University of Ibadan in Nigeria. He published approximately 50 scholarly articles as well as two books entitled ”The Black Revolts: The Politics of Racial Stratification” and ”Little Ethiopia of the Pacific Northwest” co-authored with historian Soloman Getahun. He was a pioneer and past president of the Association of Black Sociologists, and a past president and vice president of the North Central Sociological Association.
