Historical Note

As a result of her doctoral research at Pennsylvania State University in the late 1940s, Dr. Ruth Freyberger acquired more than 1,000 pieces from children ages three to sixteen. She used this large sample to identify stages of development.

At that time, this was a new concept in the field of art education, and her work was a significant contribution to the understanding of how children visually expressed themselves as they aged.

Over the years, the collection was stored at Illinois State University where Dr. Freyberger taught until she retired. In 1991, she decided to give the best of the collection to Dr. Heather Hanlon to take to Boise State University where it could be exhibited, archived, and used for future research in art education.

Of the 400 pieces that were brought to Boise State University, 175 were selected to represent the total collection and, through the support of three mini-grants from the College of Arts and Sciences in the early 1990s, developed into curated and well-presented exhibits.
