Biographical Note

Professor of law and law librarian, University of Washington.

Marian Gould Gallagher was born in 1914. She received a B.S. from the University of Washington in 1935 and graduated in the top ten percent of the UW law school class in 1937. After graduation, she was offered a job as assistant law librarian at the UW and found the work "very interesting." She worked while attending Library school, obtaining her degree in 1939. Gallagher became head law librarian at the UW in 1944 after five years as law librarian at the University of Utah. She was appointed to the advisory board of the White House Conference on Library and Information Services in 1977. Gallagher also pioneered the "Current Index to Legal Periodicals" -- a weekly publication that aids library staffs. She is an American Bar Foundation Fellow, a parliamentarian of the UW faculty senate. On May 13, 1981 the law library in Condon Hall was renamed the Marian Gould Gallagher Law Library in her honor.
