Content Description

The Tsunami Hazard Maps of the Oregon Coast were prepared by the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries to help implement Senate Bill 379, passed by the Oregon Legislature in 1995, which limited construction of new essential facilities and special occupancy structures in tsunami flooding zones. The purpose of the maps was for implementation of this public safety bill, not for land use or emergency planning. The 1:24,000 maps are annotated with the tsunami inundation boundary, the upper limit of area expected to be covered by flood water from a tsunami caused by a magnitude 8.8 undersea earthquake. In some cases this boundary extends upstream in coastal rivers.

The maps depict all of the Oregon coast and include portions of Clatsop, Coos, Curry, Douglas, Lane, Lincoln, and Tillamook Counties. The maps show undeveloped portions of the Oregon coast as well as the towns of Astoria, Bandon, Brookings, Cannon Beach, Coos Bay, Florence, Gold Beach, Lincoln City, Newport, Port Orford, Reedsport, Seaside, Tillamook, and Waldport.

The maps and report are available online.
