Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Mount Baker Community Club is a nonprofit organization that provides a gathering place for neighbors and community building. It hosts community forums, social gatherings, lectures, performances, and children’s programs. Founded in 1909, it is said to be the “oldest continuously active community club in the United States." Mount Baker emerged after 1905 when J.C. Hunter hired the Olmsted brothers to design the residential community, specifically setting aside land for a community club. The club served as a semi-independent city hall, in charge of lighting, police protection, neighborhood beautification, and local events. It also became a space for open forums on neighborhood and city issues, especially focusing on politics in the 1960s and 1970s. One significant event put on by the Mount Baker Community Club is the annual Tour of Homes and Holiday Arts & Crafts Fair, which began in 1971 to support club programs and maintain the clubhouse.
