Israel Ludlow was employed as a government surveyor. He is known for his work in the foundation of towns in Ohio including Cincinnati, Dayton, and Hamilton. Cincinnati was officially settled in 1788 by Ludlow and twenty-six others. Hamilton followed in 1790, and Ludlow served as County Clerk and formed the Ludlow’s Station community. Dayton, Ohio was formed out of a partnership between Ludlow, Arthur St. Clair, Jonathon Dayton, and William McMillan. Ludlow and his wife, Charlotte Chambers Ludlow, lived in Cincinnati where he built the largest house in the area which came to be known as the “Ludlow mansion.”
