Historical Note
Stedman Shumway Hanks (1889-1979) was a pilot, veteran of both World War I and World War II, and an airport engineer during the industry’s early years. At the start of WWI, Hanks joined the Army Air Service. As an airport engineer, Hanks published a report in 1929 on his findings and recommendations for the United States to build more international airports. In 1936, he patented a flight strip. He founded the American Airports Corporation and served as its president. Hanks also served as executive director of the Massachusetts Aeronautics Commission.

Collection contains aviation papers, a biographical sketch, and photographs of Hanks; books on the U.S. Air Force, military history, aviation history, and politics; and a book about Hanks’ correspondence, army life, aviation, the Plymouth Colony, the Hanks family, and politics.
