Biographical Note

James Sneddon grew up in Port Angeles, Washington. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Port Angeles in 1937 and attended the College of Puget Sound for one semester until 1940, when he went on active duty in World War II as a field artillery observer. While serving he first became interested in photography. After the war, he attended photography school and joined the Seattle Times as a staff photographer, but only lasted a year before joining the University of Washington as supervisor of news photography. He photographed such subjects as medical procedures, visits by such dignitaries as President John F. Kennedy, fisheries research projects in Alaska, and student uprisings in the 1960s. He was very active in the field of photography, serving as president of the Seattle Photographers Society and PRIMA gallery, a cooperative arts organization. He also taught thousands of people in his night photography classes. At the UW, he received a bachelor's (1963) and then master's (1970). Shortly after, in addition as serving as chief photographer and head of photography, was the manager of broadcast and photographic services from 1971 until his retirement in 1979. Sneddon passed away in May 1997 at the age of 77.

Content Description

Sneddon's master's thesis, "A Foot in Both Worlds," a documentary about a group of Native Americans from Alaska learning to navigate in the urban environment of Seattle. Includes footage of shopping in the supermarket, clothes shopping at the Bon Marche, riding the bus, downtown, in a courtroom, at the Pike Place Market, at the Museum of History and Industry, at the Fish Terminal, in a car at night in freeway traffic, living in apartments, Seattle Orientation Center Program run through the Bureau of Indian Affairs. 45 minutes.
