Historical Note

Military training at the University of Wyoming began in 1891 after the Board of Trustees established the School of Military Science and Tactics. In 1916, Wyoming became one of the first of seven institutions to have a Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). Army ROTC was established in 1965 by John T. Fey, then University of Wyoming President. Known as the “Cowboy Battalion”, UW Army ROTC’s goal was to produce servant leaders of high character and achievement, while helping cadets complete a college degree and later serve in the United States Army.
