Oral history interview with Bukhosi B. Dube, 2020 January 12

This oral history interview with Bukhosi B. Dube was conducted by Sankar Raman and Lisa Cohn on January 12, 2020. The interview was recorded for The Immigrant Story, an organization that documents and archives the stories of immigrants and refugees in the United States.

In this interview, Dube discusses his family background and early life in Zimbabwe. He describes the history of Rhodesia, and talks about how the country became Zimbabwe. He speaks about his parents' work, and about the house he lived in. He discusses cultural diversity in Zimbabwe, and tensions among the nation's ethnic groups. He talks about his education, and shares his reasons for going to college in the United States. He discusses his college experiences at Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas, at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, at St. Mary's College in Michigan, and at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah. He talks about why he chose those schools and about how he paid his tuition. He then speaks about attending medical school at the University of Utah. He discusses his career as a doctor in Portland, Oregon, and talks about his career goals. He speaks about his identity and experiences as a Zimbabwean American, and about raising a family. He closes the interview by talking about race relations in the United States and by describing his experiences with racism.
