Biographical Note
Raphael Coombs is listed in the Seattle Polk city directories as working as a painter, engraver, lithographic artist, and designer for various firms such as Lowman and Hanford and the Seattle Press in the 1890s. Raphael Coombs (circa 1868-1933) was the son of Samuel F. and Rachel Coombs, prominent early Seattle residents. Samuel Coombs was a businessman who worked for Henry Yesler, was an agent for the Wells-Fargo Express Company, and took an active part in the political and social affairs of Seattle.
Content Description
Five reproductions of the work of Seattle artist Raphael Coombs, one engraving by Coombs, and one pencil sketch. The works include images of Chief Seattle and the scene of a Native American canoe heading toward a three-masted ship.
Other Descriptive Information
The photographs of Raphael Coombs' 1891 drawing which was based on an E.M. Sammis photograph of Chief Seattle, made in 1862, exemplify the practice of copying without attribution common to early photography and other commercial arts.
